NEIL CHRISTIAN BACKS THE RURAL POWERHOUSE FOR MACCLESFIELD
‘If I become your MP, I am determined to unleash the potential of the rural economy in Macclesfield and beyond.’
Neil Christian, Liberal Democrat candidate for Macclesfield has pledged to ‘unleash the potential of the rural economy’ backing the Country Land and Business Association’s Rural Powerhouse campaign.
Meeting with Mark Riches, CLA Regional Director, in Disley today, Neil is backing efforts to reduce the productivity gap between rural and urban communities. CLA figures suggest that rural workers are 16% less productive than the national average, often a result of a lack of key infrastructure such as quality broadband and 4g.
If the productivity gap could be closed, it could be worth as much as £43bn to the national economy.
The Rural Powerhouse focuses on 5 key themes:
- A fully connected countryside
- A planning system designed for rural communities
- Profitable and sustainable farming
- Investment in skills and innovation
- A simpler tax regime
Neil said, ‘The Rural Powerhouse is born from the belief that the rural economy has tremendous potential, to create jobs and business success but also ease the biggest issues of our time – the housing crisis and climate change’.
